Income Tax Refund: Status Check, Interest Under 244A & Failed Refund Resolution

Written by EasyFile Tax Editorial Team β€’ Published on 07 Sep 2026

An Income Tax Refund arises when the total taxes paid by a taxpayer during a Financial Yearβ€”through Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), and Tax Collected at Source (TCS)β€”exceed their actual calculated net tax liability under the Income Tax Act. Claiming a refund is a legal right that must be exercised by filing a valid, timely Income Tax Return under Section 139(1). Once processed and approved by CPC, the refund amount is credited directly to the taxpayer's designated bank account.

Statutory Framework & Key Operational Rules

To compensate taxpayers for the retention of their excess funds, Section 244A of the Income Tax Act mandates that the Government pay simple interest at the rate of 0.5% per month (or part of a month), equivalent to 6% per annum, on the refund amount. For returns filed on or before the statutory due date, interest is computed from April 1st of the Assessment Year until the date the refund is granted. If the refund is less than 10% of the calculated tax liability, no statutory interest is payable under the Act.

Expert Compliance Note:

Maintaining accurate books of accounts and reconciling statutory ledgers (GSTR-2B, Form 26AS, AIS/TIS) prior to filing prevents automated scrutiny notices, penal interest under Section 50/234, and disallowed business expenditures.

Procedural Compliance & Professional Advisory

Common causes of delayed or failed refunds include incorrect bank account details, non-matching names between PAN and bank records, and failure to 'Pre-Validate' and enable Electronic Clearance Service (ECS) nomination on the e-filing portal. In the event of a failed transfer, taxpayers must submit a 'Refund Reissue Request' after updating their bank profile. Consulting tax compliance specialists ensures accurate return structuring, prompt processing, and quick resolution of held-up refunds.
